Kay Bentley recently joined our board as a trustee. She has a background in speech and language therapy and a lifelong commitment to volunteering. Read more about Kay and why she chose to volunteer.

What made you decide to become a trustee?

I’ve always liked being involved – whether that was with our children’s sports clubs or during my NHS career. Giving something back matters to me, and with trustee Steve’s encouragement, I felt drawn to this role. His passion for the charity is contagious.

What’s involved in being a trustee?

I’m still finding my feet! For now, I’m observing and learning how everything works.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your connection to the area?

I was a speech and language therapist specialising in children’s services. I worked in Kingston, Esher and later Epsom.

We moved to Surrey in 1992 and nearly 16 years ago, moved from Shalford to Cranleigh. I believe in community-based healthcare and volunteering allows me to use my experience in a worthwhile way.

What do you hope to bring to the team?

My background in the NHS gives me insight into local services. I bring enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. It’s also a great way to connect with like-minded people.

Have you done any volunteering before?

Simon and I were very involved in our children’s sporting lives – managing and coaching hockey and cricket teams. Now that they’re grown up, we’re reconnecting with the community.

What are you most looking forward to as a trustee?

Getting involved in a meaningful way and supporting projects where my skills are relevant.

How can the League make a difference?

By keeping services local and in the community. It saves time and pressure on hospitals and keeps people connected to care close to home.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Mainly gardening – but I enjoy all sorts of crafts too. I also used to restore furniture, and watching my children play sport is still a big part of my life.

Any hopes or ideas for the charity over the next few years?

I’m taking things in for now, but I’m ready to jump in and help where I can. Once I find a project that aligns with my skills, I’ll be ready to contribute.

Head and shoulders of a female.
